Bay Area
Moving Guide.
A practical guide to planning a move across San Francisco, the Peninsula, South Bay and East Bay — with special attention to access, buildings, traffic and moving-day logistics.

Every Bay Area move has its own logistics.
Moving across the Bay Area can look simple on a map, but the details at each property often matter as much as the distance between addresses. Street access, stairs, elevator reservations, loading areas, parking rules and traffic can all affect how a move should be planned.
The best time to identify those details is before moving day. This guide covers the practical questions worth checking as you prepare.
Start with the
property.
Before focusing on boxes and furniture, look at how the moving crew will physically get in and out of both locations. Access can change the amount of time, equipment and coordination a move requires.
At both addresses, check:
- How close a moving truck can reasonably get to the entrance.
- Whether there are stairs and approximately how many flights.
- Whether the building has a service elevator or requires an elevator reservation.
- Whether hallways, gates or doorways create unusual access limitations.
- Whether the walk from the truck to the unit is unusually long.
- Whether building management has specific moving hours or procedures.
Apartment and condominium buildings may have their own move-in and move-out procedures. Contact management early rather than discovering a required reservation on moving day.
Think about
the truck.
A convenient loading position can make a major difference. In dense neighborhoods, a truck may not be able to stop directly in front of the property, and some locations may have restrictions or limited loading space.
Questions worth asking
- Is there a driveway, loading zone or designated moving area?
- Are there posted parking or street restrictions?
- Does the building require advance coordination for a moving truck?
- Will the crew need to carry items a significant distance between the property and truck?

Distance isn't
the whole story.
Travel time can vary considerably across the Bay Area. The same route can take very different amounts of time depending on the day, time and traffic conditions. When planning a move, consider both the physical moving work and travel between locations.
San Francisco
Dense streets, hills, apartment access and loading logistics can require additional planning.
Peninsula
Route timing and property access can be important when moving between communities along the Peninsula.
South Bay
Traffic-sensitive scheduling and residential or office access should be considered early.
East Bay
Travel routes, building access and the specific origin/destination can shape the moving plan.

Prepare before
the crew arrives.
Good preparation reduces last-minute decisions. If you're packing yourself, aim to have ordinary household items boxed, closed and labeled before moving day unless packing assistance is part of your service.
Useful preparation steps
- Separate items you will personally transport.
- Label boxes by room and note fragile contents where appropriate.
- Identify furniture that may require disassembly.
- Tell the moving company about unusually heavy, large or delicate items.
- Keep important documents, medications, keys and essential personal items with you.
- Confirm access and contact information for both locations.

What can affect
moving costs?
The cost and duration of a move can depend on more than the number of bedrooms. The amount of furniture and boxes, access, travel, labor requirements, packing, specialty items and other logistics can all matter.
Common planning factors include:
- Move size and actual inventory
- Distance and travel requirements
- Stairs, elevators and long carries
- Parking and truck access
- Packing or unpacking assistance
- Large or specialty items
- Disassembly and reassembly needs
- Timing and other move-specific requirements
Provide accurate details when requesting your quote. The more the moving team knows in advance, the easier it is to understand the scope of the move.

Final check before
moving day.
Before the crew arrives, confirm that the major logistical details have not changed. A small update — such as a new elevator time or different loading location — can matter.
Let's start with
the details.
Tell us where you're moving, your preferred date and the approximate size of the move. Add any access or building details you already know.
